Kansas Birth Defects
About the System
The Kansas Birth Defects Program uses an online database to synchronize reports of birth defects from the electronic birth certificate (E.B.C.), stillbirth certificate, and those received directly from health care professionals. This allows for a seamless data collection system, reviewing and verifying reports, and conducting necessary follow-up interventions. The program supplies de-identified aggregate data on specific birth defects to the National Birth Defects Prevention Network and Kansas Environmental Public Health Tracking Network. Supplying this data allows us to tailor our program to the community’s needs, identify any outbreaks and target education and prevention efforts to identify specific birth defects.
Confidentiality
Information collected and any records received by KDHE according to K.S.A. 2009 Supp. 65-1,241, and amendments thereto, are confidential medical records. All medical records reviewed and maintained by the department are kept confidential and will not be disclosed except upon the order of a court of competent jurisdiction.
When appropriate, Kansas Birth Defects Program may use information received to notify parents, guardians and custodians of children with congenital anomalies and/or abnormal conditions of medical care and other services available for the child and family.
